The BELGIAN SOCIETY for

CONCHOLOGY – B.V.C.

The Belgian Society for Conchology (BVC) concentrates on :

·         the collecting of shells,

·         the study of molluscs, marine as well as land and freshwater molluscs, in the broadest sense, and

·         the classification and taxonomy of molluscs.

The BVC contains at present about 250 members, both amateurs and professionals. The society organizes monthly meetings with talks about the collecting, determination and study of molluscs, and where members can borrow books and periodicals from the library and exchange information and shells.

The BVC contains several active study groups that concentrate e.g. on Red Sea shells, the family of the Neritidae and the Belgian land and freshwater molluscs. Studies of members of the BVC regularly lead to the description of new species. The society also maintains regular contacts with both national and international musea, research institutions and private persons interested in molluscs. Apart from this the BVC from time to time also organizes field excursions (2 to 3 per year).

The Belgian Society for Conchology publishes the periodical ‘Gloria Maris that contains both scientific as well as more popular contributions and is distributed internationally.

Finally, the BVC is the organizer of a yearly International Shell Show that has grown over the years to become the largest in the world, with about 350 meters of tables full with shells from all over the world and shell collectors and dealers from about 25 different countries visiting it.
